WHAT IS THE COLORADO SNOWMOBILE ASSOCIATION?
Colorado Snowmobile Association (“CSA”) is a 501(c)(3) not for profit corporation seeking to ensure safety of all users and conservation in motorized winter recreation. For more than 50 years, CSA has passionately fought to Advance, Protect, and Preserve the sport of snowmobiling in Colorado.
- CSA is comprised of 36 clubs, 27 of which groom their portion of nearly 3,000 miles system of trails in Colorado. Each independent club offers their own brand of fellowship and riding experiences. The grooming clubs own and operate their own equipment to prepare, mark and maintain miles of trails through central and western Colorado. These clubs hold special use permits from the US Forest Service or BLM and even some private land owners to provide a wide range of opportunities. These trails are multi-use trails providing winter recreationists free recreational opportunities of all kinds including Nordic skiing, Hybrid Skiing, snowbiking snowshoeing, dog-sledding and winter hiking/camping activities as well as snowmobiling.
- Since the early 1970’s, CSA worked hand in hand with Colorado Parks and Wildlife to create and manage the snowmobile registration program in Colorado to partially support grooming operations with the clubs.Approximately 80% of this registration money is used to fund grooming with a small supplement from the Federal Recreational Trails Program. These funds reimburse expenses of the programs based on a formula that includes intensity of use and miles of trail. The majority of the programs are run by volunteers who work for the sheer enjoyment of their sport but many of our clubs enjoy strong community support for their efforts as well.
- CSA has partnered with SnowGoer Magazine to host the Rocky Mountain Snowmobile Expo each year showcasing the best riding destinations in the Rocky Mountain West, the best sleds, accessories, clothing and trailers on the market. CSA has partnered with Spring Fling, an annual event on Rabbit Ears Pass which has donated funds to support insurance costs and efforts such as the beacon checkpoint program. These ends have become the unofficial kickoff and end of year celebration for each snowmobile season in Colorado.
The Colorado Snowmobile Association works with other recreation groups to better everyone’s experiences. CSA is a founding member of Colorado Off-Highway Vehicle Coalition (COHVCO) and the United Snowmobile Alliance.
- We also proudly partner with other motorized users such as the Trail Preservation Alliance, Off-Road Business Association and American Motorcyclist Association to effectively voice concerns on snowmobile issues. In addition, CSA works closely with the United State Forest Service and BLM on access issues. Meetings with local, state and regional managers are held throughout the year to assure a voice for snowmobiles on public lands with high quality detailed information for our members to substantively and effectively address proposals.
- To help facilitate CSA’s presence and effectiveness in access issues a Right To Ride Fund was established in the early 90’s. Donations to this fund are used exclusively to forward the cause of access to public lands. Although no one really wants to enter a legal battle, this fund will help ensure CSA’s ability to enter a legal fray when necessary to protect our sport.
